Teeth Grinding at Night: Signs of Bruxism and What Helps

Teeth grinding at night, also known as sleep bruxism, is more common than many people realise. Because it happens while you are asleep, you may not know you are doing it until a partner hears the noise, or your dentist spots signs of wear on your teeth.

Occasional grinding may not cause lasting harm, but regular bruxism can place strain on your teeth, jaw muscles and jaw joints. Over time, it may lead to discomfort, tooth sensitivity, damaged enamel or broken restorations. The good news is that help is available, especially when the signs are picked up early.

Common Signs of Bruxism

One of the clearest signs of bruxism is waking up with a sore, tired or tight jaw. You might also notice headaches in the morning, aching around the temples, ear-like discomfort or pain when chewing.

Your teeth may feel sensitive, especially to cold drinks or sweet foods. Some people notice flattened, chipped or worn teeth, while others find that fillings, crowns or veneers become damaged more easily than expected.

Other possible signs include disrupted sleep, facial muscle tenderness and clicking or stiffness in the jaw. In many cases, the first person to notice night-time grinding is a partner, who may hear grinding or clenching sounds during sleep.

What Causes Teeth Grinding at Night?

Bruxism does not always have one simple cause. Stress and anxiety are common triggers, and many people clench their teeth during periods of pressure without realising it. Poor sleep, snoring and sleep apnoea may also be linked with night-time grinding.

Lifestyle factors can make bruxism worse. Drinking lots of caffeine or alcohol, smoking, and using certain medicines may increase the likelihood of grinding or clenching. Bite issues, jaw tension and habits formed during the day can also contribute.

What Helps with Night-Time Teeth Grinding?

The right treatment depends on the cause and the level of damage. A dentist may recommend a custom-made mouth guard or night guard. This does not always stop the grinding itself, but it helps protect your teeth from excessive wear and reduces pressure on the jaw.

Stress management can also make a difference. A calming bedtime routine, gentle jaw relaxation, regular exercise and cutting back on evening caffeine or alcohol may help reduce symptoms. Try to avoid chewing pens, biting nails or clenching your jaw during the day, as these habits can train the muscles to stay tense.

If bruxism is linked with snoring or possible sleep apnoea, it is important to seek professional advice. In some cases, further assessment may be needed to address the underlying sleep issue.
